Line drawing of the Sarby Finn
1. Introduction
Half hull model of your boat?
If the line drawings are available a half hull model can be made of your boat. Below I will explain the terms line drawings and half hull. Thereafter I will provide an overview of the models made be me.
Who am I?
My name Jan Kingma, born on the 3rd of June, 1937 in Groningen, The Netherlands. After becoming an Electrical Engineer at the Technical University of Delft, I worked for several years in the electronics industry and taught at technical colleges. Being retired, I have two major hobbies: sailing in my Finn and building half hull models of sailboats.
Half hull model?
Half hull model of the Finn
A half hull model is a three dimensional model of one side of the boat. The model provides a good impression of the hull, in particular of the part below the waterline.
Purpose of a half hull model
If a master shipbuilder of the 16th century received an order to build a freighter for the trade on the Far East, he knew from his experience how the optimum form of such a ship had to be. However he did not just start by laying the keel beam and setting up the wooden frame. Instead he mostly first built a wooden scale model of the ship. With his own ''hands on experience'' he literally gave the model the form he wished. Obviously, one side of the hull was sufficient and thus the word half hull model was created.
Only when he was fully satisfied, the dimensions of the model were taken and scaled up to provide the measurements for the actual production of the ship.

Computer aided design of the hull
Today, the ''master shipbuilder'' makes use of the computer to design the shape of the hull. He can even add material, while if his former colleague took too much of his wooden model, he had to start all over again ....
